Today, American Legion Jordan-Duncan Post 15 joins the nation in solemn remembrance of Patriot Day, a national day of mourning and reflection observed each year on September 11. It has been 24 years since the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001, a day that forever changed the course of American history and left a lasting imprint on our national soul.
On that clear Tuesday morning, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in a quiet Pennsylvania field. Among them were first responders, service members, airline passengers, and civilians, each caught in a moment of unimaginable terror. The attacks shook the foundation of our nation, but they also revealed our greatest strength: unity in the face of adversity.
In the hours, days, and months that followed, Americans stood together with compassion and determination. Firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and ordinary citizens became heroes. Our military responded with resolve, and many Legionnaires—both active duty and veteran—answered the call to defend our nation once again.
At Post 15, we remember that Patriot Day is not just about the loss. It is about honoring the legacy of those we lost by continuing to serve with purpose and pride. Our Post includes members who served in the wake of 9/11, who deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, and who returned to help strengthen their communities through service with the American Legion.
The mission of the American Legion has never been more relevant than it is on this day. We exist to support veterans, promote patriotism, strengthen national security, and serve our communities. Patriot Day is a time to renew that mission, to recommit ourselves to the values of freedom, duty, and unity that were tested on September 11.
As we reflect today, we invite all members of the Lindale community to pause and remember. Lower your flags to half-staff. Observe a moment of silence. Speak the names of those we lost. Share your memories, your prayers, and your pride.
To the families who lost loved ones, to the first responders who ran toward danger, and to every service member who stepped forward to protect our freedoms, we offer our deepest gratitude and enduring respect.
We will never forget.
