Purple Heart Day

  • American Legion Jordan-Duncan Post 15 18251 County Road 498 (Legion Hills Road) Lindale, TX 757771 USA (map)

Each year on August 7, our nation pauses to honor the brave men and women who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Purple Heart Day serves as a solemn reminder of the personal cost of freedom and the sacrifices made by those who have borne the physical and emotional scars of war.

Originally established by General George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, the Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration still awarded to U.S. service members. Today, it is presented to those who have been wounded or killed in action against an enemy of the United States. It is not a medal one seeks, but one that is earned through courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to duty.

At American Legion Jordan-Duncan Post 15, we are honored to count Purple Heart recipients among our members. Their stories of service and survival are a powerful testament to the resilience of the American spirit and the enduring strength of the Legion Family. We salute these individuals not only for their bravery in battle, but also for their continued contributions to our community and their fellow veterans.

The American Legion is built on the foundation of service and sacrifice. The recognition of Purple Heart Day aligns directly with our mission to support veterans and their families, promote national security, and uphold American values. On this day, we renew our commitment to honoring those who have paid a heavy price in defense of our freedoms.

As we reflect on Purple Heart Day, we encourage all Post 15 members and the Lindale community to take a moment to express gratitude. Whether by attending a local memorial, flying the flag, or simply saying thank you, these gestures ensure that the sacrifices of our nation’s combat-wounded heroes are never forgotten.

To all recipients of the Purple Heart, we offer our deepest respect and heartfelt appreciation. Your courage will forever be etched into the history of this nation, and your legacy lives on in the mission and spirit of the American Legion.
